5 Tips for Remembering Your Dreams

Many of us spend a great deal of our waking life imagining our future selves. We go on fantastic adventures, daydream about a special relationship, and envision ourselves working at our ideal job. Sometimes, daydreaming can be the only thing that gets us through an otherwise tough day. Our daydreams give us hope and inspiration and keep us reaching for our potential.

For as much time as we spend daydreaming, we pay little, if any, attention to the dreams we have while we are sleeping. Why do we ignore these dreams? Perhaps it is because we are too busy, and it is too overwhelming to think about having to understand our dreams in addition to everything else that is going on in our lives. We just want to sleep, and we frequently feel guilty about how much sleep we do or don’t get. Of course, it could also be as simple as not remembering our dreams when we wake up. However, it is common for people to remember having nightmares at some point in their lives. Nightmares are good at getting our attention, and they remind us that we do indeed dream while we’re asleep.

Before we can unlock the mysteries and messages veiled inside our dreams, we have to find ways to invite the muse of dreamtime to communicate with us. Think about how frustrating it is to communicate with someone over a long period of time and never be seen or heard. Your dreams are like this person who has never been noticed or listened too. To give voice to your dreams is to acknowledge all of yourself. Contrary to what you may be thinking right now, remembering your dreams does not take away from a getting a good night’s sleep. In fact, it enhances it. Below is a list of techniques designed to increase your dream recall.

5 Tips for Remembering Your Dreams.

1.      Place a dream journal by your bed.

It is all about easy access. Record your dreams as soon as you wake up and before you get out of bed. Don’t worry about remembering the whole dream perfectly. Upon waking, we remember the end of our last dream the most clearly. For that reason, it often works better to record the dream in reverse order—start at the end and work back to the beginning or as far back as you can remember.

2.      Set the intention that you want to remember your dreams when you wake up.

Each night as you get into bed, tell yourself that you want to remember your dreams. Don’t worry if you don’t remember them the next morning or even the next week. If you continue to set your intention each night, you will start to remember your dreams. From time to time, our fears and expectations get in the way of remembering our dreams. Notice if you feel anxious about remembering your dreams. If you do, then in addition to your intention to remember your dreams, request to be given only comforting and pleasant dreams to record.

3.      Create a bedtime ritual that relaxes you and prepares you for dreamtime.

A bath, a snack, a bedtime story, and a glass of water are not only for children. Creating a ritual or routine that helps you make the transition from the events of your day to a night of restful sleeping is invaluable for increasing your dream recall. We’ve all had those nights when we can’t turn off our minds, and our body keeps fidgeting. Simple things like a warm bath or shower, cup of hot chocolate, soothing music, gentle stretches, and/or ten minutes of deep, slow breathes will help to clear your mind and reduce tension in your body.

4.      Take a nap.

When we can wake up naturally without alarm clocks and the need to jump out of bed and start the day, we have the leisure of staying in that state where we aren’t quite awake, but we are no longer sleeping. This is the place where we bring our dreaming selves into consciousness. Waking up slowly without talking or interacting with anyone or anything is great way to remember the fullness and the details of your dreams.

 5.      Be open to whatever images or impressions you receive in your dreams.

Everyone dreams in his or her own way. Some people see pictures; others hear sounds, feel things, smell things, taste things, etc. Don’t judge yourself, compare yourself to others, or put pressure only yourself to have impressive dreams. Record whatever you get. It may be a sound. Did you hear a phone ring or a piano playing? It may be a word. Did you see someone’s name written in your mind’s eye; was there a word or symbol that was revealed to you? Did you see colors? Did you wake up feeling, happy, sad, irritated, content…? Write them down. They may not mean anything to you at the moment and seem trivial, but that doesn’t matter for now. Try not to censor the information you receive. What does matter is that you record these images and impressions. Each time you do, you are learning a little more about how your dreaming self communicates with you.

Sweet Dreams!

Sagittarius: Aiming For The Truth

Moving from the sign of Scorpio to Sagittarius, we enter the shortest days of the year in the northern hemisphere. The hidden, penetrating, investigative energy of Scorpio is replaced with the extroverted, optimistic, social energy of Sagittarius. Undaunted by the dark days and forbidding weather, Sagittarius individuals enthusiastically bring the party both indoors and outdoors filling the space with warmth, love, and light. These are the persons caroling outside your door, holding a warm mug of their favorite beverage with a big smile on their face. Sagittarius energy embraces this time of year. There are so many occasions to celebrate, days off from work, and parties to attend. Plus, the snow and ice provide the foundation for a host of enjoyable, winter sports. In the world of Sagittarius, this is a special season of fun. Look at the beautiful lights twinkling in your neighborhood and throughout the city, this is Sagittarius energy in action.

Sagittarius is a masculine, mutable, fire sign. These fiery individuals are curious about life and the world. Philosophy, religion, spirituality, science, nature, politics, and advanced learning appeal to them. Their mantra is “the truth will set you free.” They not only seek to understand the higher laws of nature and the universe but also want to share their insights with society. For this reason, Sagittarians make great spokespersons and champions for causes; they appreciate and care about the people and issues they support. Generous, idealistic, and independent, Sagittarius individuals have what it takes to make dreams come true.

Believing that life is an adventure and something to explore and take an active role in, they inspire and motivate others through ideas. These individuals see the truth as a living thing, not something that you read about in books, but something out there in the sky that sprints between the clouds and stars. Truth is something that can be known, for those courageous enough to pursue it. They don’t buy into false concepts, stereotypes, prejudices, injustices, or persons with closed minds. Although they can be dogmatic at times when it comes to their personal beliefs, if presented with compelling, new information, they will modify their positions and attitudes accordingly. Hence, Sagittarius people learn best through experience.

Sagittarians have strong opinions, and they speak openly about what’s on their mind. This uncensored communication style gets them into trouble from time to time, especially with people who find candid interactions uncomfortable. If you dyed your hair a color that is unflattering to your skin tone, they will tell you so without hesitation. You would want to know that wouldn’t you? They are frank but also well-meaning. It is not their intention to hurt your feelings; it’s quite the opposite. They are telling you these things to be helpful and out of compassion. Instead of allowing you to walk around in public with the wrong hair color and no one saying anything, Sagittarians are brave enough and thoughtful enough to tell you. Of course, the “truth” is a matter of perspective, and if you disagree with the Sagittarius’s assessment of the situation, they will give you a puzzled look. How could you possibly think otherwise when it is so obvious to them that it is the wrong color? This is the Achilles heel for Sagittarians. They seek to know the one, ultimate, absolute truth. Their minds instinctively search for a definitive, right answer. They are not fond of gray areas. Nevertheless, once they can accept the conflicting truths of others without judgment and understand their relevance, they have mastered a higher truth. The goal for Sagittarius individuals is to experience what the truth is without ego or the need to be right.

The centaur is the symbol for Sagittarius. A mythical creature that is half-human and half-horse, it represents the sophisticated and untamed nature of Sagittarius energy. The human aspect of the centaur embodies an otherworldly wisdom and the capability to question the validity of established viewpoints. The animal aspect gives Sagittarius persons a deep appreciation and love for the natural world and a desire to be unbridled and independent. In Sagittarian imagery, the centaur is holding a bow and arrow and shooting towards the sky. The arrow represents a mind and an intellect reaching for something beyond the human/animal nature of the centaur. This being is neither human nor animal, and yet it is both. There is a yearning inside the centaur to integrate his seemingly dualistic nature. He points his arrow towards the heavens to find an answer and bring that knowledge down to earth. The centaur is also a symbol of strength. It combines human intelligence with powerful, instinctual force. Sagittarians possess athletic ability and excel at activities that employ both the mind and the body in a focused effort.

Jupiter is the planet that governs Sagittarius. He brings cheerfulness and expansiveness to these individuals. Jupiter encourages Sagittarius natives to dream big and stay positive no matter what life brings them. Jupiter is the perennial Santa Claus. He makes all things possible if you believe, and knowing what you believe is extremely important to Sagittarius people. In astrology, Jupiter is considered a beneficial planet-one that brings good fortune and luck. Jupiter makes things bigger. However, Jupiter is not discriminating in what he expands. He can multiply your savings account or your debt. Identifying and paying attention to what you want to increase in your life is crucial to using the gifts of Jupiter effectively. Since Sagittarians like to have fun and are generous with their resources, their enthusiasm for life and passion for adventure can turn into impulsiveness and an unhealthy appetite for the latest new gadget, trend, or relationship. This is another area where the Sagittarius person’s belief system can help or hinder their overall well-being. They can take optimism to the extreme with the help of Jupiter’s copious influence, and buy as much time as they can before having to face the consequences of their detrimental behaviors and choices. But, when they do grapple with unpleasant situations and outcomes, they never really loose hope; there is an ember of optimism still glowing within. They learn from their mishaps and honestly share their stories to keep others from making the same mistakes.

We enter a stage of learning in Sagittarius that moves beyond mundane facts towards transcendent knowledge. Here, the person seeks to figure out the essential truths of existence and find concrete answers to ageless questions. Questions like, where does the soul reside, and what is true for all people. Sagittarius individuals are testing their beliefs, concepts, and faith to see if they hold true in everyday life. This is the college student immersed in the world of learning. They are being mentored and at the same time, making new discoveries that contribute to the evolving knowledge of their vocation. Sagittarians are also wonderful teachers because they have a youthful disposition and easily befriend children and teens. Sagittarius persons blend the wisdom of adulthood with the wonder of youth. Over time, their keen observations move from pointing out the elephant in the room to finding out how and why the elephant is in the room in the first place. They have the stick-to-it-ness to learn everything they can about elephants while contemplating the higher purpose of what the elephant’s presence can teach them and humanity.

In our astrological charts, each of has the energies of Sagittarius and Jupiter influencing some aspect of our lives. These are the areas of our lives where we maintain a positive attitude and desire for understanding. The combined energies of Sagittarius and Jupiter encourage us to feel abundant. This feeling of abundance is fed by the spirit and nourished by giving to others. Both Sagittarius and Jupiter energy signify hope, belief, and self-reliance. They are the cheerleaders inside of you that tell you can do it. They serve as guides lighting the way to your success. Sagittarius energy favors saying what’s on your mind and communicating clearly. It’s time to speak your truth. Be courageous. Explore points of view different from yours without bias. What wisdom can be found in interpretations and opinions unlike your own? Discover your own truths. Go on an adventure. At this busy time of year, lift the spirits of others through joy and laughter. Celebrate the many ways you are fortunate. Spend time with the special Sagittarius people in your life; you are bound to feel lucky in their presence. Make at least one snow angel after a fresh snowfall. More than one is better. It increases your fun quotient. Then go inside and have some hot cocoa. Don’t forget the marshmallows!

Scorpio: More Than Skin Deep

As we move from the sign of Libra to Scorpio, there is a distinct change in energy. In nature, the days are darker, the weather is more severe, and the plants are dying back to the ground. The trees have lost their leaves, and you see the structure of their trunks and branches clearly, as if  you were looking at a diverse bunch of skeletons dancing in the landscape. Libra energy focused on beauty and harmony. Scorpio energy delves beneath appearances and niceties of the environment to discover what is operating below the surface. This is the cycle of death, slumber, and rebirth. Scorpio energy wants to know what is happening in the darkness and in our unconscious selves. Just as the natural world burrows to find warmth and safe places to hide during the winter months, Scorpio individuals are on a quest to discover how to nourish and maintain life in harsh situations when the world seems frozen and hardhearted. Scorpio is about survival.

Scorpio energy is intense, perceptive, and present. Depending on whether they are introverts or extroverts, they can sit discreetly in the shadows observing their environment or take center stage and mesmerize their audience. They know immediately when they meet someone if they like them or not, if they trust them or not, and if they are attracted to them or not. They are pulled to connect. Their soul recognizes who will play an important part in their lives. Their potent emotions direct their intellect. Wounds of the past are not forgotten or released easily; they hold on to them until they can figure out how to protect themselves from a similar fate in the future. They seek divine love—the all-consuming, until death do us part, walk over burning coals kind of love. They understand the concept of for better or worse, sticking by your side through it all. Despite their substantial emotional strength, they are fearful of losing love. They can feel cheated by love if their beloved doesn’t feel as strongly and genuinely about them as they do about their beloved. The Janis Joplin song, “Piece of My Heart” is a good example of Scorpion devotion. It is hard for them to imagine that others don’t experience life as acutely as they do. The reactions of others can feel shallow and inauthentic to Scorpio individuals as a result. They need loved ones grounded and resilient enough to stay with them when the next surge of emotion hits, and the next transformation takes place.

Scorpio is a feminine, fixed, water sign. The Scorpio individual is immersed in the world of emotion and the psyche. The fixed quality of this sign gives more weight to the emotions than the other water signs. They interact with people and their physical surroundings through their visceral bodies. Although they try to manage their emotional responses, their feelings sweep them away like an ocean tide, or more accurately, like a tidal wave. People are often afraid of Scorpios after reading about their astrological characteristics, but I have found that their powerful, all-or-nothing nature causes as much trouble for the Scorpio person as for those around them. In many cases, their personal suffering is more devastating and lasting than the hurts they cast out toward others. Nonetheless, Scorpios are passionate people that are capable of great love, great anger, and greatness in general. Because they feel so profoundly both the benefits and consequences of their actions, Scorpio energy teaches them about the laws of karma. Scorpios are motivated to evolve and amend their destructive or less than virtuous behaviors in an effort to keep them from having to experience the effects through their heart time and time again. The Scorpio heart transmutes their emotions into gold or dross depending on the wishes of the individual. Scorpio people rise above the limitations and obstacles that move through their lives, and by example, inspire others to triumph over their difficulties without shame or judgment.

There is more than one symbol associated with the sign of Scorpio—the scorpion, snake, eagle, and phoenix. Together, they symbolize the life force and path of Scorpio persons. The scorpion is Scorpio energy in its most unstable and chaotic form. The individual utilizing this energy focuses on her/his basic needs and mastery of her/his surroundings. The snake is adaptable, can evoke fear, and is associated with sexuality and seduction. Through periodic molting, the snake sheds its outworn skin and removes toxins simultaneously. Using this form of Scorpio energy, the person is beginning the transcendent journey of integrating the needs of their physical and spiritual bodies. The eagle is a majestic predator associated with bravery and honor. Here, the Scorpio individual is applying her/his power to serve, lead, and protect groups of people that are like-minded and respect her/his values. The phoenix is a mythological bird that is immortal. Each lifetime lasts hundreds of years, and when the phoenix does perish, it rises from its ashes— young, new, and vital. Scorpio people living the life of the phoenix are concerned with spiritual concepts, evolution, and the desires of the soul. Thus, the Scorpio person has many energetic qualities available to her/him through the wise use of these totems.

Pluto is the dwarf planet that rules Scorpio. Despite its reclassification from that of planet, its influence on Scorpio remains the same. Pluto is the god of the underworld. He reigns over the dead and the riches that are buried in the earth. Through Pluto, Scorpio gains access to places forbidden and deadly to the other signs. Instead, the Scorpio emerges reborn and wealthier from the passage. Pluto is an ally that can accompany Scorpio persons into the recesses of the psyche and the unconscious mind. It is up to the Scorpio individual to forge an astute and respectful relationship with Pluto to ensure safe travels as they enter the depths of Pluto’s world. When the Scorpio person is resistant to growth and letting go of negative behaviors, the time spent under Pluto’s watch feels like forced imprisonment and punishment. On the other hand, when the individual is ready to face her/his inner demons and take responsibility for the circumstances in her/his life, Pluto is a healer that eradicates the dysfunctional patterns of the person, allowing them to start their lives over with a fresh slate. Most Scorpios go through life-changing situations more than once in their lifetimes. They shed their skins; reinvent themselves, and enter the world with a new awareness.

Scorpio energy is the stage connected with understanding the psychological nature of humans and other life forms. These are the mythological stories of traveling through the underworld where a mysterious metamorphosis takes place revealing the true, naked, authentic person without the trappings of their ego and society. Part of the appeal for Scorpio persons on this journey is that they get to explore and learn about concepts and ideas that are foreign to them. They are attracted to customs and beliefs of other cultures and alternative lifestyles. They are intrigued by the secrets of life and death. They are fascinated to learn what makes people tick. Scorpio people are curious about the criminal mind, the spiritual mind, the psychotic mind, and the genius mind. They like figuring out the riddles of human nature and make excellent detectives, healers, and psychologists.

We all have the energies of Pluto and Scorpio operating somewhere in our astrological birth charts. These are the areas of our lives where we experience the most profound and life-altering shifts in our consciousness and understanding of ourselves and the world. These are also the places where we experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Is there somewhere in your life right now that could use a complete and thorough makeover? These situations require our conscious effort and determination to make the hard choices and changes needed to achieve the results that will help us fulfill our spiritual goals. Our tendency is to avoid them because they “feel” overwhelming and terrifying. However, when we ignore them, these are the same places where we feel as though the rug has been pulled from under us. Seek out your Scorpio loved ones to teach you the courage of the heart. Their devotion will melt away your fears. Explore the things that motivate you on a daily basis. What or who ignites your passion? Discover and uncover the real you. Take time to replenish and revitalize your body by letting go of past disappointments and injustices. Feel as deeply and completely as you can in this moment. What is your heart telling you? Do these powerful feelings feed your soul and increase your vitality? If not, it is time to cleanse your heart and renew your commitment to love.

Libra: The Center of Beauty

Moving from Virgo to Libra, color returns to the landscape once more before the ground freezes. We are transitioning from a period of service, associated with the sign of Virgo, to one focusing on alliances and partnerships, correlated with the sign of Libra. The first day of Libra marks the fall equinox in the northern hemisphere. The hours of day and night are equal on this day, and for a moment, are in balance. Each day after the autumnal equinox, night increases over day minute-by-minute. You experience the change in daylight physiologically and see the signs all around you. The sun takes a little longer to rise, and the mornings are cool and crisp. The trees are changing color and plopping their leaves and seeds on your head as you walk by. The squirrels are helping out by knocking acorns and other various treasures to the ground, munching on what they can and burying the rest. There is a vibrant palate of red, orange, and yellow emerging in the landscape initiated by the chilly nights and warm afternoons. Throughout the region, areas of the terrain will reach peak fall color. This peak phase is another short-lived moment in time when the plants are synchronistically revealing their greatest autumnal splendor. Trying to fit everything in during daylight hours becomes a challenge. Our bodies desire more rest and crave comfort foods. The last of the warm days occur during Libra, and everything in nature scurries to prepare for the restful slumber that will come with winter.

Libra is a masculine, cardinal, air sign. The symbol for Libra is the scales of justice. Bringing things into balance, seeing both sides of an issue, and treating others fairly are Libra characteristics. Libra individuals experience beauty, tranquility, and harmony when life is in equilibrium. Libra is the divine equinox of humanity. It takes nature six months to achieve this point of equality between day and night, but Libra energy strives to maintain this place of grace and poise at all times. At first, Libra individuals willingly compromise and offer their abilities to maintain and restore serenity in their personal and business lives. They assume that others will alternately relinquish some of their needs for the good of the group or the relationship. However, Libra persons can only surrender their needs for so long before getting angry and frustrated if they are the lone ones making these sacrifices. Anger is not easy for the Libra person to express, because it upsets their inner balance and desire for connection with others. Their internal scales begin to swing and tip in distress. This is exactly the opposite of what the Libra person wants to manifest in their lives.

There are two insights that can help the Libra individual in their quest for peacefulness in their environment. The first is to return to the symbolism found in the equinox. In nature, evenness is not lasting. It is a moment in the flux of life. These are important moments nonetheless. They are like the guideposts of life. Nature can only swing so far out of balance before it must move in the opposite direction in order to sustain itself. The rhythm of ebb and flow, inhaling and exhaling, expansion and contraction together achieve balance. For the Libra individual, this means not trying to keep things in a fixed stance, but allowing things to dance and move at their own pace. Life and people are at times chaotic and discordant with each other. This is a challenging atmosphere for Libras to coexist in for any length of time. But once they can accept this and let go of their need to stabilize the situation, their presence acts as a guidepost for those around them. Their ability to be open-minded, fair, and accommodating brings about the same qualities in others during uncomfortable negotiations and conditions.

The second awareness that allows Libra individuals to direct their energy in a positive way is to connect with the strong, still, and centered place within. The gift of Libra energy is that when the individual can remain centered and loving in discordant circumstances, they do not take on the conflict personally but diffuse it by not losing their internal balance. Emotions, thoughts, and judgments run through them simply without causing the Libra person to sacrifice themselves or their beliefs to the needs of their environment. Instead, they move authentically in ways that do not diminish who they are, but enhance their ability to form satisfying associations by relating to others honestly and with compassion.

Venus is the planet that rules Libra. Venus also rules the sign of Taurus. Taurus is an earth sign, and Venus’s influence in this sign is sensual and conveys beauty and love through the five senses and the material world. In the air sign of Libra, the goddess of love and creativity bestows beauty that is seen and communicated through the mind. Libra energy is the muse of writers, readers, designers, wedding planners, artists, mediators, and coordinators of all sorts. These persons can imagine the exquisiteness of the unmanifested and bring it to life. Through Venus, Libra energy infuses love, relatedness, and leisure into every aspect of their lives. Libras can daydream and escape into this pleasant world, but just as often they use their minds to envision the options that are available to them and to understand both sides of an issue. It may take them longer to make a decision or take action in a situation because of this trait since part of their process includes listening to the opinions of others and finding solutions that will endure while respecting everyone’s intentions. Venus influences Libras to be romantic, gracious, elegant, and easy-going individuals. They like their surroundings to be relaxed and appealing. This sign appreciates the intrinsic wholeness that is found in music, plays, paintings, movies, relationships, books, dancing, and creative expression. Libra energy does not objectify the magnetism of Venus or use her powers for selfish ends. Beauty inspires Libra individuals to awaken their inner magnificence and share it with others. They understand the importance of design and aesthetics in their everyday world; beautiful settings feed the soul and strengthen self-love.

In should come as no surprise that in the sign of Libra, we enter the cycle of development where we are learning the art of collaboration—personal, legal, and peer. Fundamentally, Libra energy governs all alliances between people who enter a partnership with each another either by choice or by necessity. Libra energy in its highest expression is a wonderful element to bring into a relationship. Libra people strive to be attractive, fair, cooperative, considerate, attentive, and optimistic. These qualities are usually present at the start of a partnership, but Libra persons realize that these are the ingredients crucial to maintaining positive, long-term unions. When idealized, Libra energy focuses on appearances and the idea of love. Here we have the Hollywood fantasy of the beautiful couple who never disagree and fulfill each other’s every need. This is when the Libra individual’s desire for harmony is held in a fragile balance. The power of Libra energy arises when they use their abilities to unite opposites: objectivity with idealism, equality with variation, and justice with forgiveness. Imagine two children playing on a seesaw. The joy they feel comes through the movement and the shared experience. If the seesaw is held in a fixed position and never allowed to move, it will lose its intended purpose—to bring happiness through teamwork.

Each of us has the energies of Venus and Libra operating somewhere in our astrological birth charts. These areas of our life run smoothly when we compromise, share, and support others. Libra energies encourage us to treat others as equals while remaining true to ourselves. Along with Venus, Libra energy also instills a love and appreciation for the arts. Look for ways that you can make your surroundings more visually attractive and pleasant. It could be as simple as changing the background image on your computer screen, listening to your favorite music in the car as you drive to and from work and run errands, or bringing home some fresh-cut flowers. Is there somewhere in your life that needs more collaboration? Pay attention to your needs and those of the people close to you. Is there a natural give and take in your relationships, or are the scales heavy on one side? Spend time doing nothing and giving your mind ample space to imagine and dream. Enjoy a good book, movie, or play with the special Libra people in your life. Go out dancing with friends. Devote an afternoon to renovating or redecorating a space that is worn and lifeless. Let the energy of love run through your body and permeate your thoughts. Fall in love with yourself and life. Beauty is within you and all around you. Breathe it in, and savor each moment. Your life is a peak experience filled with vibrant colors.

Virgo: The Receiving Mind

In the northern hemisphere, as the Sun moves from Leo to Virgo, the days are noticeably shorter, the nights are cooler, and the humidity drops. The grand gardens of Leo, which in their peak reached towards the clouds, take their final bow dropping their seeds on the ground for next year’s show. This is a transition time in nature. The colors of the Virgo landscape are muted and subtle. The trees and plants are still green, but for the most part are done blooming. The outward growth period has ended. The plants begin to die back, replenishing their roots systems by absorbing as much water and nutrients as they can to carry them through until spring. Virgo is the season of the harvest, a time when we pick the remaining flowers, fruits, and vegetables, gather seeds, and remove and prevent the future growth of things we find undesirable. Thus, the energy of Virgo moves inward, conserves resources, and prepares for the change in atmosphere.

Virgo is a mutable, feminine, earth sign. The symbol is the harvest goddess. She is associated with fertility and bounty. Virgo energy is the bounty of the mind; she/he gathers wisdom. These individuals scan the environment for information and understanding. Virgo persons notice the weeds, the uneven growth, the distress, and anything that threatens to take over their well-maintained gardens. Because Virgo is an earth sign, they focus on practical matters and the physical world. Their minds are sharp and clear, but never make the mistake of believing that their mind is more important than their heart. The needs of the heart drive the Virgo mind. Virgo individuals try hard to appease the mysterious devas that rule their emotions. They look for things they can do or accomplish in the mundane world to both soothe their worries and enhance their well-being. Virgos are extremely sensitive individuals whose feelings are as easily hurt as any one of the water signs. Because they are highly attuned to their environment, their moods, behaviors, and beliefs change and vary depending on their situation and the people that surround them. They are aware, and their mind very quickly and astutely attaches an emotional value to what they perceive. Feelings and thoughts go hand in hand. On the surface, their expression may appear calm and their words witty, but that is only because they fear exposing and expressing their feelings until they have had a chance to sort them out. But since their emotions can’t be organized, contained, or denied, how does one sort them out effectively beforehand? This is one of the more perplexing puzzles for Virgos to piece together.

Perfection is a word commonly used and overused to define Virgo energy. I would like to replace it with the words completeness and wholeness. Virgo strives to bring everything, and I mean everything, to its highest potential. It doesn’t matter whether we are talking about people or an overflowing junk drawer. These individuals are constantly working on ways to improve themselves and the world around them. If they aren’t actively doing something to achieve this, you can bet they are thinking about it and probably losing sleep over it too. In important matters or in an emergency, Virgo’s attention to detail and discernment is invaluable. Clarity of the mind and perception are some of Virgo’s gifts, but when the mind operates in overdrive, they drive themselves and everyone else crazy by trying to do too much. Life becomes a never-ending to-do-list, with an auxiliary honey-do-list just in case they fall behind. Completeness and wholeness is really what Virgo longs to bring into reality, but they get lost, frustrated, and alienated when they equate these terms with attaining perfection—a standard and an ideal that is unachievable and arbitrary at best.

The planet that rules Virgo is Mercury. This winged courier of the gods also rules the sign of Gemini. In the sign of Gemini, Mercury bestows a love of ideas, learning, and communication. Thoughts and philosophies are an eternal playground for Gemini. In the sign of Virgo, Mercury’s influence on the intellect is much more serious. Virgo individuals use their minds as a vehicle to serve others. Their perception is as incisive as that of their Gemini counterparts, but Virgos use the information they receive from the environment to remedy what is lacking or detrimental to the situation. Hence, Virgo energy at its core seeks to heal through the mind. In Mythology, Mercury is the messenger that brings communication between the gods and from other realms to humans. Virgos receive information from all these dimensions simultaneously. Virgos observe things that are often unseen by others. They can sense early on the likely outcome of a situation because they detect the subtle signs of its onset. While this is a wonderful gift that Mercury bestows to Virgo, the person must learn how to recognize and interpret this knowledge wisely before it can be helpful to anyone. The Virgo person may believe they possess more common sense than the average person does or that they are more astute in observing the cues coming from the environment. Yet, their knowing does not originate from their mind alone. Imagine if Mercury gave you an antenna that allowed you to receive messages from anywhere in the universe 24 hours a day, every day of your life. Mercury is a trickster god, so he doesn’t tell you about the antenna our show to it to you; he just turns it on. Now, if you are walking through life as a Virgo, this flood of data can be overwhelming and exhausting until you understand where it is coming from and how to turn it on and off. Hidden from awareness and always on, this energy stresses out the Virgo individual—mind, body, and soul. They become, nervous, jittery, frazzled, absent-minded, aloof, and irritable. They fluctuate between trying to “fix” everything and everyone in their proximity to spending vast amounts of time alone to empty their minds and reduce the input from their surroundings. Attempting to compartmentalize, repress, or emotionally shut down to keep from receiving this material doesn’t work. The Virgo individual must learn how and when to access this transmission. Quieting the mind and focusing solely on their needs is the first step. Observing without speaking or acting is the next step. When Virgo persons can watch and listen without doing something, they discover that things work themselves out without any effort on their part, and they work themselves out in ways the Virgo mind never imagined. Letting go and untangling from situations and people who are not interested in and do not value the Virgo individual’s insight frees them up to focus on their innate abilities and allows them to provide authentic service to the world instead of cleaning up other people’s messes.

The growth stage associated with Virgo is the mature adult. Virgo energy is responsible and self-reliant. Virgo is the parent, the employee, the entrepreneur, and the friend that is mindful of details and the needs of others. Here again, we see Virgo’s desire to be of service. It is the energy of selfless compassion and voluntarily giving one’s love and time to the needs of the whole. Virgo energy nurtures humanity and the world by providing the tangible resources and guidance required for growth and maintenance. The mature adult has grasped a level of comprehension where she/he can generally predict the outcome of their actions. Accordingly, Virgo persons are also conscious of the concept of karma—the law of cause and effect. Virgo energy strives to mitigate and avert karma, but just as a parent must allow their child to make mistakes in order to grow and evolve, Virgo individuals must grant themselves the same permission to make mistakes and be human. Loving themselves and others unconditionally is the key to Virgo wholeness.

Each one of us has the planet Mercury and the sign of Virgo operating somewhere in our astrological birth charts. There is an area(s) where we seek wholeness, understanding, and clarity. This is the place inside us where we reflect and find our own answers. We fine-tune our mind to pick up the frequencies of the divine and our higher selves to help us heal, evolve, and assist others in worthwhile ways. Use your Virgo resources and abilities to bring order to the parts of your life that appear chaotic, depressing, and painful. Are their events in your life that require discernment and could benefit from a different perspective? Allow Mercury to bring you information and wisdom from other worlds and from unseen sources. Show gratitude to the Virgo people in your life for all the hard work they do. They do it because they love you. They also do it because they are unable to sleep peacefully when there is so much left to do, but I digress.

Leo: The Fiery Spirit of Creation

As we leave the sign of Cancer and enter the sign of Leo, we move from night to day, from moonlight to sunlight, and from unconsciousness to consciousness. Cancer taught us how to feel and listen to our inner voice. Now, in Leo, it is time for us to act on our inspirations. The heart is still the area of focus, but instead of being nestled safely inside the home, it takes center stage. Leo is a sign that wants and needs to be seen, respected, and most of all loved. Leo gets a bad rap for this need, but we all have this longing to some degree; it is just that Leo desires to be appreciated publicly and privately. Leo is not shy about displaying her/his talents and enjoys entertaining others whether at home or on stage.

Leo time is the peak of summer in the northern hemisphere, right before the harvest. Nature is full of color and vitality; the birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and in the summer garden, the Leo plants are the ones working hard to be the tallest, showiest, and most beautiful. Free time is spent playing and vacationing in the sun. There are outdoor art fairs, music festivals, and sporting events. Originality, amusement, games, leisure, and healthy competition are characteristics and activities that are associated with Leo. Leo also relates to children, and Leo natives possess a childlike, playful quality throughout their lives.

Leo is a masculine, fixed, fire sign. Its energy is extroverted and steady. Imagine a lively fire crackling in a stately fireplace prominently situated in the center of the house where everyone gathers; that’s Leo. The warmth of Leo energy draws you in and mesmerizes you. Leo people calm your fears and make you feel that everything will be ok as long as you are in their presence. They have lots of charisma, and it is easy to fall under their spell.

The Leo heart beats with valor and passion especially for those they love. The lion is the symbol for Leo, and similar to the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, Leo persons actualize their courage when facing their fears. As the king or queen of the jungle, they adore, promote, indulge, and defend those under their reign. Leo individuals like challenges and work hard to be the very best they can be in their personal and/or professional lives. Their reputation and outward appearance is important to them, and they want their environment and possessions to reflect their ideal image of themselves. This can get them into trouble when they equate wealth with self-worth since Leos have a tendency to spend money liberally on expensive items. On the other hand, Leo natives are generous and big-hearted with their resources. They are the sign most likely to take you out to a fancy restaurant and pick up the tab. As long as Leo energy emanates from the heart and not the ego, the Leo person and those around her/him will be happy. Thus, taming the ego is the main life lesson for Leo souls.

Leos don’t like to be told what to do or pushed around. They prefer to work autonomously or in a leadership role. They want to be in control of their lives and their destinies. Therefore, they choose vocations and relationships where they can take the lead and have a certain amount of freedom. When they do lead others, they often worry about their performance and obtaining the approval of their colleagues. Again, this is an area where the Leo ego must stay in balance. They treasure their successes the most when they can share them with loved ones. Striving to be the best of the best at the expense of others does not serve them well because it often results in them being alone with their success. Performing in an empty theater is not fun, particularly for Leo people. Leos desire the companionship of others; they want the important people in their life to tell them they are loved and that they matter.

The Sun is the planet, or more accurately, the star that rules Leo. It is in the center of our solar system, and all the other planets rotate around it at varying speeds and proximities. Without the Sun, life as we know it would end. The heat, power, and radiance of the Sun are at the core of Leo. Leo natives are spectacular rays of sunlight shining in the world. The Sun encourages Leo individuals to be the stars of their life and to share their vibrant sunshine with others. Because their need for recognition is strong, the trick for Leo people is to resist the temptation to develop a persona that will win them the highest approval instead of being honest and authentic in their interactions with others. Love and creativity are the fuel that keeps Leo energy burning evenly and brightly. For Leo, self-expression equals self-love. Having a hobby or vocation that allows them to focus their creative energy on something they admire, enjoy, and are proud of keeps Leo persons inspired and fulfilled. It also helps them avoid burnout of self and others. This is the introverted side of Leo energy. The Leo native redirects their light inward and concentrates on bringing one of their dreams to life. It can be any activity that ignites the Leo heart: writing, cooking, music, designing, trip planning, sewing, sports, gardening, cosmetology, carpentry, raising children, and/or restoring and repairing cherished belongings. Whatever interest they choose will be a labor of love, and their creations will sparkle and glow with a signature Leo flare.

In Leo, we are in the stage of the young adult. Everything we have learned about ourselves and life thus far has been mainly from our family and the social influences we experienced in the place where we grew up. We recognize what makes us special in the eyes of our family and friends. Now it is time to test our abilities out in the world. Depending on the direction we choose, our world and the people in it can dramatically change. New persons enter our lives; we move away from home and begin to determine the path we would like our lives to take. It is a time when we are learning what it is to be an adult and be responsible for our actions. Full of our own expectations and a healthy dose of advice from our family and loved ones, we are ready to find our place, the place where we can shine. We are confident, optimistic, and excited with life. Romance, adventure, and passion drive us forward. We cram in as many experiences as we can before we “settle down and get old.” This is the time in our lives when we devote as much energy to play as we do to work. Leo natives, no matter what their age, take time to relax and have fun. They realize that time away from work is not a luxury but a necessity. Play ignites their imagination and sustains their passion for life.

Since we all have the energies of Leo and the Sun located somewhere in our astrological birth chart, we can access and apply them to the areas of our life where we want to have more pleasure, imagination, and possibility. The healing energy of Leo reminds us to bring our authentic self out into the world. Leo teaches us that none of us is replaceable, and no one can step in and fill the role we were meant to perform. Utilize your Leo energies to uncover your creative abilities. Remember that you are the artist of your life. Each thought you have, each emotion that arises when you see a sunrise and sunset, every choice you make throughout your day is a dynamic one and designs your life. See what you can manifest when you give it your love and light. Do something special for your loved ones. Spoil them and yourself with love. Let others know what you need from them to feel appreciated, and ask them what they need from you. Pursue goals worthy of your time, and take the necessary steps to fulfill your extraordinary destiny. Rekindle your fire and excitement for life. Challenge your fears, and roar with pride as you overcome each one. Play in the sun; go on vacation, and make room in your life for leisure time. Find new opportunities to bring joy into a child’s life. Invite the special Leo people in your life for a night on the town. They are familiar with the best places to go to be treated like royalty. Relish the fact that there will never be another you. You are special.

Cancer: Creating a Safe Haven for the Emotions

Moving from Gemini to Cancer, we are embarking on what has been referred to as the longest journey in a person’s life, the journey from the head to the heart. In Gemini, we learned and experienced life through ideas. In Cancer, intuition fuels our actions, and we heed the wisdom of our heart. Cancer energy redirects our attention away from our rational minds and towards our instinctual selves. This is not an easy shift to make and can cause difficulties for the Cancer native when they are in an environment where their natural way of being is undervalued. However, understanding the language of the heart is a necessary step in fulfilling our human potential. Cancer individuals recognize that our emotional selves bring us a level of knowing that complements the logical mind. They are cognizant of the fact that when they illuminate what they feel in any given moment, they receive invaluable information and insight that they can use to guide their decisions. Hence, Cancer people have great instincts. When they follow their hunches, they are frequently right. Their ability to honor and express emotion is one of the gifts Cancer people bring to humanity.

In the northern hemisphere, the beginning of Cancer marks the summer solstice and is the longest day of the year. In the southern hemisphere, it is the shortest day. Cancer and its polar opposite sign of Capricorn are linked with the two seasons that have extremes of day and night. Whether it is long days or nights, these signs are the gatekeepers that establish boundaries to reign in excesses and provide safeguards. Both signs are parental in nature. Capricorn initiates structure in the public arena through their work, and Cancer creates structure through nurturing others and building a secure home life. Cancer parents place the interests of their loved ones above everything else. They form strong bonds with their families, especially their mothers.

Cancer is a feminine, cardinal, water sign. The crab is its symbol. Crabs are nocturnal animals that move in a sideways motion. Part of the evening landscape, crabs enjoy the company of their own kind. Metaphorically, Cancer individuals tend to move sideways by interacting with people and situations in an indirect manner. Often, they don’t come right out and say what they are thinking. Instead, they assess the energy in the room and ask roundabout questions to determine if their perceptions are accurate. Even though they are fiercely protective of the people they love and their possessions, they avoid direct conflict at all costs. When encountering difficult people, Cancer persons are more likely to express their displeasure with people other than the individuals that are the source of their stress. They seek the emotional support and connection of their “own kind,” which in this case, is a group of trusted confidants who advise them and soothe their worries.

A common picture used for the sign of Cancer shows a crab at night, by water, and under a full moon. There is comfort and peril depicted in this image. The crab in many ways is safer coming out after sunset rummaging for food in the cool night air. On the other hand, it is easier for predators to conceal themselves in the darkness. This signifies one of the conundrums that Cancer people face. When they venture out into the world, how can they ensure their complete safety? Change can feel threatening to a Cancer person and sometimes manifests as generalized fear that incapacitates them and makes them reluctant to move past their comfort zone. Stubbornly refusing to reveal her/himself fully to strangers and unfamiliar situations, the Cancer person slips beneath the water and settles comfortably in its shell until she/he senses the need to come out. The lesson here is for the Cancer native to trust not only their instincts but also life itself. Moving beyond fear and connecting with a higher source of guidance allows them to remain keenly aware of their surroundings while learning to navigate and adapt to new experiences. Like a ship moving through the sea, the Cancer person cannot control the waves that crash against her/his boat but can learn how to navigate through the rise and fall of the currents.

When the crab sheds it shell, it must find a new dwelling. Similarly, Cancer people look for safe refuges at home, work, and anywhere they spend significant amounts of time. The more time they spend with others, the more their intuition fills and retains the emotional and psychic interactions of everyone in the room, consciously and unconsciously. They are fundamentally perceptive and sensitive people. Cancer individuals process emotions, everyone’s emotions; emotions run through her/him continuously. Carrying this energy without releasing it muddies their awareness and makes them tired and cranky. They need places where they can escape to maintain their equilibrium. These shielding sanctuaries are a necessity that allows them to let go of anxiety, explore their feelings, and maintain their boundaries. It is only by separating themselves from all that is going on around them that they are able to hear and act upon the information their intuition is sending them.

It probably comes as no surprise that the Moon is the planet that rules Cancer. The cycles of the Moon have an effect on all of us, but her influence is especially strong for Cancer individuals. Like the tides, Cancer reaches out and withdraws from the world following her or his own rhythm. Their moods change quickly and regularly. They experience the full range of their emotions as they wax and wane. Cancer energy holds the waters of life in lakes, rivers, oceans, fountains, vessels, and cupped hands. Their emotions are the water that nourishes and renews relationships. The Moon is the great cosmic mother watching over all the creatures under her guardianship, and in turn, Cancer natives care deeply for those who need and depend on their love and protection. Both genders are gentle and loving, and have a rapport with women. Usually, there is at least one female in their life that has or had a profound impact on their identity and sense of self. Cancer people are reflective, sentimental, and have impressive memories.

The stage of development associated with Cancer is the teenage years. Torn between the safety of the past and the excitement of the future, we cross the threshold that leads from childhood to adulthood. Our emotional selves are blossoming and coming out in full force. Here we experience life in phases. We fall in love with someone or something, and then we fall out of love, only to fall in love again. We discover what we love and what we hate. We are anxious, depressed, impulsive, and temperamental. We are also loving, kind, sympathetic, curious, and imaginative. We want to find our kindred spirits; those special people that love and validate us unconditionally. We seek the protection and alliance of the group, our group. Cancer individuals love their friends like family. Once they love somebody or something, it becomes part of their being. They live in their hearts forever, never to be forgotten. This is also period in our life when we realize our limitations and discover what we can and can’t do. Through Cancer, we clarify what our needs are, what we must leave behind, and what is worth keeping. It is a time of finding our place in the world, accepting ourselves, using good judgment, and following feelings. If all goes as planned, the moody teenager grows into a wise and compassionate grownup.

Somewhere in our astrological birth charts, we all have the energies of the Moon and Cancer operating. These are the areas in our lives that beckon us to walk on an unknown, untraveled path. Moonlight only reveals a portion of our destiny. It is up to us to pay attention to the nonverbal cues sent to us by our unconscious minds. Practice tapping into your intuition. Discover the ways your emotions speak to you. Open your heart to your innermost longings and attachments. Stand by a lake, stream, river, or ocean and send it unlimited love. Pull out unhealthy debris. Acknowledge the vital life forms living beneath its surface. Bathe yourself in divine love. Dive into your deepest self. Notice when you are with people and in situations where you are loved. Also, notice when you are in situations where things don’t feel quite right. Take time to release the worries of the day. Cleanse your intuitive and emotional body along with your physical body. Keep yourself hydrated. Define what safety means for you. Does your need to feel safe provide you with a secure foundation for your life or does it limit you? Hug a Cancer. See if you can get them to come out of their shell.

Gemini: A Clever Breeze

Moving from the sign of Taurus to Gemini, what was previously established and brought into form is taken apart and dispersed. Gemini energy in action is the wind that lifts the seeds from the trees and plants high into the air allowing them to establish themselves in completely new and unfamiliar places. In the case of Gemini, these seedlings and slips of greenery are the ideas and facts they have acquired and allowed to take root in their active minds. Gemini gathers a few seeds of inspiration from various sources and mixes them together creating an original landscape of expertise and awareness. These individuals are like a spring breeze that passes through everything and anything in its path making sure to observe and record their perceptions along the way.

The world speeds up in Gemini, or more accurately, the mind speeds up. The “don’t rush me” stance held by Taurus is replaced with Gemini’s “faster, faster” mode. There is so much to do, learn, and look at; Gemini doesn’t want to miss a thing. Most of all, they don’t want to be bored. Their mind is astute, searching, and ever changing. Thoughts form at a rapid pace, and knowledge is absorbed quickly. Then, the Gemini person processes this data through their imagination and transforms it into concise, accessible concepts. Needless to say, Gemini people find pleasure in mental pursuits. Play for the Gemini individual is using their brainpower to solve puzzles and study the next topic that intrigues them. Affirmations, visualizations, meditations, and other intellectual exercises appeal to Gemini. They are the kings and queens of multitasking, always doing at least two things simultaneously. Possessing manual dexterity, they are adept at taking things apart and fixing them. Geminis are masters of communication, magicians that entertain and expose you to diverse worlds and ways of seeing. They can talk you into just about anything, and they can talk you out of it too. Gemini is the divine trickster that can unmask your shadow with a few clever phrases. Before you know it, you are disclosing personal secrets and confidential information to the Gemini individual you just met. They possess a mischievous, witty, and youthful disposition and aren’t overly worried about the consequences they may endure in the spirit of having fun.

Gemini is a mutable, masculine, air sign. Here the mind and not emotion is at the forefront. The consistency of Gemini energy is that it uses thoughts and ideas to perceive and traverse the world around them. The symbol for Gemini is the twins. Often depicted as opposites, Gemini has a characteristic duality. Generally, there is a public and private twin. Sometimes they have hidden these aspects of themselves so well, even the Gemini person herself/himself is unaware they exist. Thus, the trickster energy that fuels the Gemini nature often tricks them the most. The twin hidden from view contradicts their carefree persona. They do value stability, intimacy, and familiarity as long as these relationships and conditions don’t imprison their time or their thoughts. The emotional sphere trips them up, and when the Gemini person can’t fix or comprehend the situation rationally, they get extremely frustrated and try to untangle themselves from their surroundings. This is where the other twin comes into play. She/he is the twin that has the task of staying connected and grounded in the physical body and establishing security and closeness in relationships. To catch a glimpse of this twin, look into the twinkling eyes of a Gemini, and hold their gaze. This twin is much more serious and dwells between each blink of the eyes. Encounter the person that is concealed behind the winks and the bright Gemini conversation. Catch the attention and affection of this twin and the Gemini will reward your genius with everlasting love, because both twins desire to be known by their beloved. Be aware that Geminis need to take breaks, devote time and resources to educating themselves on a variety of topics, and go off on their own periodically to rejuvenate and cleanse their psyche. If they aren’t allowed a certain amount of personal autonomy, they will drive everyone crazy in their attempts to break free. Their words can be sharp, their emotions remote, and their behavior erratic when they feel anchored too tightly in one place. An ideal Gemini relationship is one that combines commitment with freedom, partnership with individuality, and intelligence with thoughtfulness.

There is a deeper layer to the symbol of the twins to consider that goes beyond the superficial concept of duality. The twins guide Gemini persons toward wholeness and self-awareness. Through the twins, they see a reflection of themselves and are able to recognize various aspects of their personality allowing them to analyze and integrate these seemingly contradictory qualities. Instead of projecting their shadow selves on others, Gemini people have the ability to ascertain, separate, and acknowledge it as being part of their character. The twins teach Gemini how to hold both their human and divine dimensions together as one.

In Gemini, we are in the cycle of the young child entering school and being exposed to a multitude of subjects and knowledge. This is not the comfort stage of Taurus where we are building and concentrating on the familiar. This is the stage of growth where we develop academic abilities, meet new people, find the best ways to communicate our needs, and navigate our environment. We increase our verbal power and learn what to say, how to say it, and when to say it for the maximum effect. Education is held to the highest Gemini standards; it must be fun, interesting, stimulating, and captivating. Gemini is the child and the adult that who repeatedly asks, why? Why is that so? Why is that true? Is it true for me?

All this thinking and processing of data takes energy, and Gemini people can exhaust themselves, become ungrounded, and agitated by this nonstop, cerebral exertion. They need some pastime, daily practice, or vocation that takes them out of their thoughts and into their body. Otherwise, they become scattered, nervous, and jittery. When they are young, they can resist leaving the realm of the intellect to focus on mundane matters for even short periods, because everyday life appears dull and confining without the mental escape their thoughts can provide. Gemini is associated with the lungs and breathing. Therefore, breathwork and movement that directs their attention on their body and clearing their mind calms and nurtures the Gemini soul giving them the inner freedom and expanse they require.

Mercury is the planet that rules Gemini. Mercury serves as the winged messenger of the gods. Carrying divine secrets swiftly through the heavens, Mercury holds a powerful place in the royal court. Without his assistance, the gods would be isolated from each other and the news of the world. Mercury also represents fertility, abundance, and healing and brings these talents to Gemini via mental acuity. Granting access to sacred communication is another gift Mercury bestows on Gemini. Their intuition and higher self speaks to them through thoughts and words. A Gemini person possesses a knowing that allows them to see errors in logic and distill vast amounts of material into something useful. Mercury, like all the gods, has his shortcomings. His restless and impulsive tendencies distract him from his tasks. When he becomes too involved in petty interactions, he spreads gossip instead of higher knowing, a trap that Geminis must work hard to resist. The key is to keep Mercury honest by conveying information that is of value to the self and others and travel on a higher frequency than negative chatter. The influence of Mercury matures within the Gemini individual, and although they will never lose their passion for learning, their life becomes more settled and balanced as they focus on the people and interests that are the most important to them. For if ever a Gemini is cutoff from their ideas, you have unequivocally cut off the wings of Mercury.

We all have the energies of Mercury and Gemini operating somewhere in our astrological charts. To connect with this energy in your own life, examine your thoughts. What things do you think about most of the time? What subjects or areas of study call to you? Perhaps, there is something you have always wanted to read about or experience through a class. Commit to being a life-long learner. Fly high above your everyday life and view it from a sacred perspective. Can you see your life and yourself as divine and ordinary at the same time? Are their parts of yourself that you are reluctant to divulge and accept? If so, befriend your humanness and make it a priority to discover your essential needs. Resist the urge to participate in rumors and hearsay. Use your communication skills for disseminating positive messages. Solve riddles, do crossword puzzles, or engage in playful activities where you exercise and use your brain. Spend some time with the special Gemini people in your life and ask them to share their latest intellectual pursuits. Concentrate on your breathing to access your inner wisdom and strengthen the relationship between your mind and body. Pick a dandelion and blow the seeds into the wind. You might be sowing the seeds for your next salad or your neighbors!

Taurus: Mine is the Path of Natural Magnificence

As we enter the sign of Taurus, the fiery blaze of Aries subdues into smoldering embers and ash that heats and nourishes the earth. All the ideas, new adventures, and self-discoveries that we started in Aries begin to take root. This is the time to focus on what we want and enjoy and find ways to acquire more of it. In the northern hemisphere, the ground softens and nature awakens. The warm earth fosters the growth of a multitude of life forms that choose to rest upon and beneath its surface. Yet, not everything has made it through the winter, especially the things that were unprotected or unprepared for a time when the earth was barren. Taurus people take heed of that lesson, and make sure they are protected and prepared for every circumstance. They are determined to make it through any winter that life throws their way. Now ready for spring, Taurus energies concentrate on tending the earth by removing what is considered noxious or invasive and replacing them with items that contribute to the majesty, restoration, and serenity of the landscape, both their inner and outer landscape. This takes muscle, hard work, and a respect for nature—qualities that are the essence of the Taurus spirit.

Taurus is a feminine, fixed, earth sign. In the sign of Taurus, the person is interested in the material world, the body, and physical security. The five senses are developed, and individuals influenced by Taurus energy seek things that look good, feel good, smell good, taste good, and sound good. Hence, they value quality, adore the finer things in life, and are willing to work diligently to obtain them. They are often collectors or partake in some vocation or hobby that appeals to the senses. Surrounding themselves with their treasured belongings relaxes Taurus individuals, and they in turn feel happy and safe. Their intuition is intrinsically connected to their bodies making them great healers and builders in the physical realm. Because they are sensual beings, Taurus energy that is pronounced and well placed in a natal chart gives the native a beautiful voice, an enjoyment of the outdoors, craftsmanship, and a sensitivity to touch. They are keenly aware of their surroundings and have a powerful, laid-back persona. Their compassion, patience, and follow-through make Taurus people excellent teachers in whatever subject interests them.

The symbol for Taurus is the bull. Like the bull, Taurus individuals are strong, persevering, and connected to the land. Brave and nurturing, Taurus provides the practical necessities for survival. They are extremely loyal and are reluctant to walk from a situation or relationship no matter how difficult or unpleasant it becomes. They will persist through bad times in the hopes that the good times will return. The bonds they form with others develop slowly and deepen over time. Trust is of the utmost importance to them, and once they decide they can trust you, you have a Taurus friend for life. However, if they feel betrayed by someone they care about, they shut the door on the relationship forever. Because Taurians tend to hang on to things, including people, it takes them a great while to process and finally let go of the experience. Closure doesn’t come easy to them, and mistrust triggers Taurian anger. When the loving bull has been hurt, it responds like the stereotypical raging bull. Their voice booms, doors slam, and the earth trembles under the Taurus stampede. Learning to release their past and not hold on to their anger until it erupts into rage are life lessons for Taurus people. They can endure a lot and carry a heavy load like the bull that represents them, and Taurus energy can be “bull headed” and closed to outside interference or advice. However, this sign also instructs one to focus on the job at hand and put one foot in front of the other ensuring success in the end.

In Taurus, we move into the toddler stage of the zodiac. The terrible twos of Taurus translate into a will of iron, feet planted firmly on the ground, and a fierce temper when their needs are continually frustrated and just out of reach. Here the earth energy is in the building process. Taurus individuals are concerned with maintaining and sustaining what they consider theirs. Determining what is mine, yours, and ours is an important matter for Taurus. They have solid boundaries, and if they find you messing around with their toys or in their territory, you will find yourself face-to-face with a wild bull. Taurus energy is not in a hurry. If you think of a Type A personality, Taurus is somewhere further down the alphabet, perhaps Type H or I. However, Taurus is not a passive sign. They just don’t like to be rushed or pushed into doing things they don’t value or aren’t ready to accomplish. Imagine a toddler when they don’t want to do something, and they sit down on the floor refusing to move. They resist their parents’ efforts to pull them up, body limp and hollering for effect. With Taurus children, their parents need an extra dose of patience and stamina to match the will of their tiny bull. That’s true for the people that love grown-up bulls too. The storm does blow over, and they return to their affectionate selves if you give them enough space to allow their concentration to shift naturally. Taurus energy takes its own, sweet time. It has its own rhythm, slow and steady. They follow their instincts and wait for the internal signal that tells them it is time for action. Taurus people will achieve their goal, just not today, tomorrow, or maybe even this year. Multitasking is not something this sign enjoys unless it involves engaging all the senses at once. With Taurus energy, the person wants to make sure they have a solid path to walk on before heading in the direction of their dreams and desires. They are not fond of change and do everything they can to make certain their choices will endure. When winter does arrive, they are always ready for it.

Venus is the planet that rules Taurus. Under her influence, Taurus receives an appreciation and an eye for art, design, and beauty. She also bestows them with creative talents. As the goddess of love, Venus brings a sweet and maternal quality to this sign making Taurus the earth mother that supports the development of everyone and everything she loves. She mentors Taurus people by encouraging them to create enticing works of art that can be seen, touched, tasted, heard, and smelled. Guiding them to share their masterpieces with others, Venus casts reflections of her loveliness throughout the world, one Taurus at a time. She inspires Taurus to fully explore the tangible world and indulge the senses. Therefore, temptation and immoderation can be a problem for Taurus individuals. Getting outside and active in nature tempers that inclination. Fertility, deep affection, and body wisdom are a few of the gifts Venus gives to Taurus.

We all have Taurus and Venus operating somewhere in our astrological birth charts. There are places in our lives where we are stubborn, unwavering, and interested in material satisfaction. These are also the places where we are comfortable, unhurried, and tender. Taurus energy allows us the sovereignty to move at our own pace in the direction of our aspirations. Here we take the time to learn thoroughly, the steps and skills needed to thrive instead of merely surviving. And, Taurus teaches us to have reserves to draw upon in times of need.

During this time of earthly knowing and investigation, discover what supports your physical body and delights your senses. Examine what requires your patience and focused energy in order to manifest. Find ways to pool your resources and use them in ways that provide the maximum return on your investment. Explore what prosperity means to you. Is there something that you have been holding on to for sentimental reasons that no longer serves you? If so, gently release it knowing that something better is waiting for you. Enjoy a good meal, concert, makeover, or a day at the spa with the special Taurus people in your life. Celebrate the beauty in nature and honor your own beauty. Do something just because it feels good. Connect with the rhythms of your body and feed your artistic yearnings. Make your living space more beautiful by painting the walls, adding a plant, listening to your favorite music, or displaying a cherished collection. Become aware of what you value and create an atmosphere that reflects your beliefs. Most of all, Taurus is a time to eat dessert first while sitting in a comfy chair, wearing your favorite outfit in the place that makes you blissful!

Aries: The Sensitive Warrior

As we move from the ethereal land of Pisces to Aries, we begin again, and the great wheel of the zodiac ushers in a new cycle for learning and evolving. It is a time for letting go, spring-cleaning, and inviting in new energy. The bridge between Pisces and Aries brings the wisdom of the spiritual realms into action. What has been sleeping is now awake and the unconscious becomes conscious. In the northern hemisphere, this is the time of year when the snow melts and reveals what has been trapped in its icy fingers all winter long. Spring in Minnesota is a mix of 50-degree days, rain, and impromptu snowstorms. You’ll see people in shorts and flip flops walking over patchy mounds of snow alongside people in winter coats. The temperature changes quickly throughout the day, warming up and cooling down as if a child was triumphantly pressing the buttons on a thermostat. This is Aries energy, pushing forward, overcoming obstacles, and enjoying the warmth of the Aries Sun as it beckons us to come out and play.

Aries is a masculine, cardinal, fire sign. Symbolized by the ram, Aries energy is impulsive, spontaneous, and assertive. The ram represents the passionate side of Aries, the part that is quick to anger when challenged and instinctively rushes forward, headfirst in whatever direction entices him or her at that particular moment. Aries energy is the energy of the individual acting upon its environment. Fiery and fierce when provoked, Aries is also warm, creative, and spirited. As the first sign of the tropical zodiac, Aries is also associated with the infant. The innocence, curiosity, and expressiveness of a newborn child or animal are the heart of Aries energy. Aries is the hope of the future, the new life that must be cherished and protected, and the sleepless nights required to bring this brand-new creation to maturity. Watch people’s reactions around babies and you’ll see the magnetic quality innate in Aries individuals. They can command a room just by smiling at you and snuggling in your arms. They can also clear a room by howling until their needs are met, exhausting the strength and patience of their loved ones.

Continuing with the image of the infant, this is a stage in our lives where we have just entered physical reality. We have traveled from a place of non-form, a place we may only vaguely remember, and into a world where we cannot yet effectively communicate our experiences verbally. Sometimes it is a language barrier, and sometimes, Aries has intelligence and a knowing that may not be understood or acknowledged by others. Their emotions and actions move swiftly though them, and their reactions are instinctual. Like a flare, they express what is inside of them, and then it’s over. They have cleansed themselves and moved on to the next thing unburdened. Although those around them may get ruffled or frustrated and find the Aries individual’s behaviors combative, the Aries person sees it as expressing their opinion simply and directly.

Aries people are on the hero’s journey. Their goal is independence and self-awareness. They are in a hurry to follow their passions and move boldly into uncharted territories. Charismatic, they persuade people to follow them as they blaze new trails, but as leaders, they serve to inspire and excite others—not take care of them. This is another area where Aries individuals get into trouble in their interpersonal relationships. If they lose interest in something, they abandon it and start something else. The people that followed them thus far can be left wondering what to do next and expect their Aries leader to show them the way. However, Aries energy is much more enterprising than it is sustaining. The implementation of the idea or endeavor is handed over to others to execute.

Like all the fire signs, Aries people bring enthusiasm, self-reliance, and inspiration to everything they do. But unlike their fiery cohorts Leo and Sagittarius, they are in the early stages of developing their confidence. Therefore, Aries individuals are the most influenced by feedback from their environment. On the path of self-discovery, early on, Aries individuals want to know who they are, what they like, and what makes them different from everybody else. Their life force is courageous and trusting like the first flowers of spring emerging from the ground. And, like the first blooms of spring, if they emerge too soon, they run the chance of encountering an environment that is inhospitable, harsh, and unable to foster their growth. Because they must discern how others respond to their actions in order to survive and mature, Aries individuals are the sensitive warriors of the zodiac. Returning to the image of the baby, next time you have a chance to spend some time with a newborn, notice how their expression and mood changes when different people come into the room. They sense the energy of everyone around them and definitely state their preferences about whom they want to hold them. Many Aries persons have telepathic abilities, and it is in this beginning stage of the zodiac that their power and sense of self is forming. They are discovering how to exert their will. Over time, by continuing to test the limits of their surroundings and the people in it, they gain the wisdom of how to balance their needs with the needs of others. They learn to rein in their spontaneity just a tiny bit and listen to their environment for vital clues of how their actions will be perceived. They still proceed quickly, but now their actions are based on having more information and assessing the potential consequences and outcomes of their choice. This shift in awareness makes life for the Aries much more pleasant. Ascertaining how to exert their desires without alienating those in their surroundings is the life lesson that will lead to their success.

Mars is the planet that rules Aries. As the god of war, Mars is the drive we need to defend ourselves and go after our desires. Its energy is directed outward. Mars is the power of “I”. Vitality, strength, and force are qualities of Mars. Representative of masculinity, Mars solves problems by doing things and acting alone. Traditionally, Mars in a woman’s chart describes the qualities she is looking for in a partner. It still holds some truth; however, women have an easier time claiming their Mars energy today than women did a few generations ago. A prominent Mars placement in the chart of either sex signifies someone who is self-assured, autonomous, and open. An indomitable planet, Mars energy requires a constructive outlet to keep it from becoming self-destructive and antagonistic. This potent energy is the stuff of great athletes that gives them the ability to put the body to the test and achieve heroic feats. Any activity or profession that necessitates muscle and expediency falls under the domain of Mars. Additionally, Mars can also represent intensity of the mind and spirit. Yoga, meditation, or working with energy and the energetic body are other possible Mars pursuits.

Each of us has Aries and Mars energy stirring up mischief in some part of our astrological birth chart. In this time of new beginnings, look for the areas in your life that need more vitality. Where do you need more get-up-and-go to achieve the results you desire? If there is a place in your life where you have experienced setbacks, re-double your efforts, and don’t underestimate your ability to achieve your aspirations. Embrace the grace of beginners mind, and explore the places in your personality that require more attention and care to develop. Attune yourself to the energy of your environment. Send out happy vibes. Exercise and get outdoors. Nurture new life. Volunteer to work with children and animals. Bring your enthusiasm, creative brilliance, and warmth into the world. We need your passionate creations, your unique talents, and your confidence to lead us in new directions. Be the hero or heroine in your life and in the lives of others. Go on a quest that enlivens your spirit. With gratitude, call out to the first flowers of spring coming up from the ground and thank them for their courage and beauty. Hug the special Aries people in your life. See them light up. Don’t procrastinate; go out and have some fun! Play in the Sun, play indoors, play at work, play at night, play, play, play! You’ll be all the wiser as a result.
